HF Radars for Wave Energy Resource Assessment Offshore NW Spain

چکیده
Wave energy resource assessment is crucial for the development of marine renewable industry. High-frequency radars (HF radars) have been demonstrated to be a useful wave measuring tool. Therefore, in this work, we evaluated accuracy two CODAR Seasonde HF describing offshore areas west Galician coast, Spain (Vilán and Silleiro capes). The resulting characterization was used estimate electricity production converters. Results were validated against data from buoys numerical models (SIMAR, (Marine Simulation) WaveWatch III). statistical validation revealed that radar cape significantly overestimates power, mainly due large overestimation period. effect radars’ loss during low periods on mean partially compensated with height theoretical electrical converters also affected by these differences. Energy period estimation found highly conditioned unimodal interpretation spectrum, it expected new releases software will able characterize different sea states independently.

This paper describes the innovative offshore point-absorber wave energy converter (WEC), IRWEC1, under development by the Hydrodynamics, Acoustics and Marine propulsion Group at Babol Noshirvani University of Technology. Totally enclosed in an outer shell, with no external moving parts, IRWEC1 is completely sealed which make it a robust and trustable system. Important motion for this WEC is the...
متن کاملWave Energy Resource Analysis for Use in Wave Energy Conversion
In order to correctly predict and evaluate the response of wave energy converters (WECs), an accurate representation of wave climate resource is crucial. This paper gives an overview of wave resource modeling techniques and applies a methodology to estimate the naturally available and technically recoverable resource in a given deployment site. The methodology was initially developed by the Ele...
متن کاملHF radars: Physical limitations and recent developments
High-frequency (HF) radars based on ground-wave propagation are used for remotely sensing ocean surface currents and gravity waves. For some 20 years a number of sytems have been developed taking advantage of improved electronics and computer techniques. However, the performance of these systems are limited by physical constraints, which are due to HF wave propagation and scattering as well as ...

Two commercial Navier-Stokes solvers are applied to wave-wave and wave-structure interaction problems leading to the final application of simulating a single float of the wave energy converter (WEC) Manchester Bobber in extreme waves and a fixed section of the Pelamis in regular waves. First the two software packages CFX and STAR CCM+ are validated against measured results from physical tank te...
متن کاملHistory, Present Status, and Future Directions of HF Surface-Wave Radars in the U.S
HF surface-wave radars (HFSWRs) offer two distinct advantages when used over the sea: with vertical polarization, they see beyond the horizon, and the interaction of their signals with ocean waves is simple and well understood. As a result, many HFSWR research test p rogram were conducted in the US., heginning 35 years ago. This author was fortunate to have been immersed in these programs from ...
